First Steps

My musical life started with the piano and grew to include the electric
bass when I became a teenager. At some point in my early twenties,
I realized that I loved the bass, but wanted the polyphony offered by
the piano. And in 1984, a string of events occurred that led me to a
new world of music making. The first was in January 1984, when I went
to the NAMM convention in California and saw The Stick first-hand,
up close and personal. I didn't get a chance to try one, but I got some
literature and watched others for a while.
The second event happened a month or two later, when I saw an ad in
a music magazine for The Stick. Then in the late spring, I attended the
end-of-year concert at my college for the music majors. When their
recital ended, a special performance was presented - featuring
Emmett Chapman. Driving this series of events home was a late
summer concert to see Santana. Now, those familiar with Santana's
music know The Stick doesn't and never has been part of the band's
instrumentation, but that year, Alphonso Johnson was touring with them
as their bassist. As part of the show, Alphonso chose not to do a bass
solo, but instead strapped on The Stick and performed a lovely piece
with the drummer. A month later I called Stick Enterprises and ordered
my own and in October 1984 I was the proud owner of a brand new
Stick. My advice to anyone learning this instrument is  simply this.
devote all or at least a majority of  your practice time to The Stick.
If you have spent years becoming competent or even expert with
another instrument, why should you expect to apply less effort to a  new
and different method of making music ?
For example, let's say you've been playing guitar for five years and
now you want to learn The Stick. If you split your time practicing The
Stick and guitar, during the next 10 years, it will take you this time to
achieve the same competency with The Stick as it did with guitar.

Keep on tapping.

Agradezco a Mr Crain su colaboración  y mi agradecimiento por escribir unos estupendos
