.POLYCHORDS.
A real advantage to playing two handed on The Stick is the use of
Polychords. Simply put, this concept is the simultaneous playing of
two chords to produce a larger more interesting harmonic statement.
There's no reason to be satisfied playing C Major triads or D minor
when we can play D Maj 7/9 or C minor 11.
.
Basic theory should be part of any creative players' arsenal.
This knowledge enables and promotes more "sophisticated"
writing and arranging. This is important. Let's try some examples.
.
If we  want an A minor chord we simply play A C E the notes of this triad.
But we have the ability to also use extensions like 9's and 11's etc
.
A minor extended is
A
C
E
G
B
D
F#

1
b3
5
b7
9
11
13
.
If we isolate any three consecutive notes in this
layout we get many different triads
.
A C E = A minor
C E G = C Major
E G B = E minor
G B D = G Major
B D F# B minor
.
The answer is all there.
.
A min 7 = A minor + C Major =  A C E G
( C is the relative major of A min)
.
A min 9 = A minor + E minor = A C E G B
(E min is a fourth below A min)
(Also one string lower on The Stick)
.
A min 11 = A minor + G Major = A C E G B D
( G is one step below the A min)
.
A minor 13 = A minor + B minor = A C E B D F#
( B min is one step above A min)
.
The best way to solidify these relationships is to understand
and memorize the math that's listed next to each.
These concepts work in any key.
Try these ideas with Major or Dominant chords extended
(i.e.)
G7 extended =
G
B
D
F
A
C
E
1
b3
5
b7
9
11
13

Have fun dressing up your basic chords.
Arrange with powerful harmonic concepts.
